Why My Blog Isn’t Making Money | Confessions of A New Blogger

Pin for a Friend - Click the image on the left below :)

Updated 3/2021...end of the first quarter of 2021.

This quarter has been challenging, and finally my meditation journal is no longer on global distribution.

You may still see the journal in a few places with the old price of $27.99, since it may take a bit for those retailers to get rid of the current stock.

My goal is to be able to sell outside of Amazon, but until then. You can purchase The Body Love Mindset: A 365 Day Meditation Journal, my journal, for $19.99.

I'm learning as a new author it is so important research all of the options for publishing and promoting your books!

We will be discussing more about this going forward :)

Below are my stats for the first quarter...

The well is so dry.

The dread of writing another blog where the statistics / income reports / earnings reports are pitiful!

There are holes in my income producing marketing plan.

How do I know? I haven’t made over $50 in my blog since the official launch in November.

Income sources:

  • Journal -global distribution
  • Affiliate Marketing
  • Patron
  • Google Adsense

Soooo are you confused yet?

3 Mistakes That Is Causing My Blog To Be Unprofitable (Don't Let It Happen To You)

  1. Managing Too Many Products
  2. Unattractive Tripwire
  3. Limited Marketing

1️⃣ Managing Too Many Products -

Being a Jack of all trades doesn’t get the bills paid!

This blog started out with all the things!

When you have too many offers, it can be confusing and you don’t know what to try first.

It’s like being at an international buffet. Which dish would you choose first?

It is also so exhausting because you have to build an optin or offer around each product. If you use a conversion tracker like Build Redirects, even though it’s easy to switch out the offer links, you are still having to mange different products if you have multiple offers.

Managing too many products affects your google analytics. Your numbers are not as consistent or easy to track because there’s so much to monitor.

If you are trying to keep your cost low, as most new bloggers are, try to keep everything as simple as possible.

Here's a look at my Google Analytics for 1st Quarter 2021 - yes it's through 3/25 - 6 days early - it's ok:)

Surprisingly, I get a lot of direct search traffic so I will give myself some credit - however, this is a learning process and I'm not giving up!

Solution - affiliate marketing is great but it needs to be specially connected or related to my main product offering. If it is not- it’s time to put that affiliate product on hold just until you are consistently making money from your main offering.

Affiliate Marketing Reject

Ok, so glad that you are still here.

The income from all of my affiliates that are currently promoted on my blog, Godaddy, Namecheap, Office Depot & OfficeMax, Vitamix, and Amazon. is $0. Let's get free...it's got to change!

2️⃣ Unattractive Tripwire -

The secret sauce that one item whether it’s an ebook, checklist, swipe file, or list builder.

That optin should entice your website visitors to become your subscribers.

That hasn’t happened on this blog!

It’s sad...

and I accept the emotion but I’m not staying in that place.

Why wouldn’t someone want an ebook copy of my internationally bast selling co authored book, a mindset hacks checklist, and my audio version of my guided meditation.

Dang did you get all of that?

Maybe it’s too darn much! I mean what tha?

The relationship has just begun and I’m moving a little too fast.

Yes it’s free but too much can overwhelm your peeps!

Or maybe it doesn’t fit with what people are looking for.

How do you know?

One way to find out is to look at your analytics. Analytics are everything!

My husband had a program that he just mentioned that may provide even more data than google analytics so I will keep you posted.

How I monetized using free ads

Let’s look at Google Adsense.

You can have multiple websites under one account. Let's of course focus on this website. Only $.03 for 1st quarter! Ok...so the moral of the story is - need more traffic!

  3️⃣ Limited Marketing

It’s possible to run a successful blog without tons of social media advertising and marketing - it just may take more than 6 months.

A friend and Pinterest enthusiast told me to post like 20 to 40 times a day I think....I still have a long way to go.

I did hire my daughter to help with Pinterest management and creation.

How are you doing with Pinterest?

I’m still less than a year in but have scaled back.

When I was posting at least 10 times my numbers rose up to 180k monthly views then started dropping.

I felt at the time maybe there’s something else I needed to be doing.

Sometimes free resources don’t give you the results that you need.

Maybe it’s time to try some paid marketing strategies. This area requires some research.

My journal is solely selling on Amazon now.

Below is the last of the income from lulu's global distribution.

Also, I have retired by book from there and it's now just on Amazon. Now I get to at lest make a few dollars instead of pocket change for each book!

Also I lowered the price - get your copy

You can support my future printing company efforts by joining my patreonhere

I, Hicunni, am being super transparent here.

In a previous state of mind, I would have been very embarrassed to show this data.

It’s great to see how we are starting out and what we are learning through the process.

So what’s the next move?

If you are not making money with your blog:

✅ Don’t give up! Learn how to turn your fear of failure into freedom check out my podcast on how to do that in detail here

✅ Focus on the main product first until you are making a consistent income

✅ Keep an eye on what your audience wants so your tripwire leads them to be subscribers

✅ Re-evaluate your marketing strategy and add paid strategies if needed

Let this blog encourage you to get focused on a plan to have the successful blog that you’ve always wanted.

A goal without a plan is just a dream. You’ve got this! We are in it to be the change and create the life that we want!

Until next time!

Posting content without doing prior research is dumb.

Keyword research is a must...

Mindful Blogging For Beginners What Not To Do

Mindful blogging for beginners, what not to do.

What if your blog isn't making money?

What can you do to get that money flowing in abundance?

Just in case you missed it...

A reminder:

Don’t despise small beginnings.

This category of Money Tips and How To Make Money Online is a way to document the journey of this blog, howtoliveintime.com

We officially loaded the first post on 10/20/20, however the goal was to start tracking our earnings for the month of November.

Please click here to learn 3 ways we started making money online so you can too.

I shared the income report here for November.

You will see what not to do as a beginner blogger that we did in December.

So this is somewhat of a December earnings report  or income report for blogging.

How Much Did We Make In The Month Of December?

But first - Let’s Look At Where Traffic Came From

Right now, organic traffic has been the focus.

If you look at the screenshot below, you will see how many visitors decided to check out the blog in December.

I'm so stoked because the traffic has almost doubled in a month!

Most is still direct traffic from my blog posts.

Keyword searching has been a huge help -

in learning how to craft a blog post, being more mindful of what is posted, instead of just throwing content out there.

You know how it is...you want to get that blog post out so bad, you don't take time to see if the topic is searchable.

A More Detailed Peek- A -Boo

So what the crap is baidu?

Do you know?

Apparently, it's a search engine mostly catered to the Chinese Market. Interesting...

I was very shocked that my traffic from Pinterest was low to my website. It's getting lots of eye balls on Pinterest.

Check out my Pinterest and follow.

Part of the Pinterest traffic has to be included in the (Direct) Source. Because all of my blog links are listed in my pin description.

If you want to get more traffic - get a Pinterest account my friend.

How I monetized using free ads

Let’s look at Google Adsense.

Google Adsense - for the month of December, we made....drum roll please….

$0.27  Sucks right?! Totally wasn't expecting this to be so low! This is something that definitely needs further investigation.

Affiliate Marketing Reject

Ok, so glad that you are still here.

The income from all of my affiliates that are currently promoted on my blog, Godaddy, Namecheap, Office Depot & OfficeMax, Vitamix, and Amazon. is $0.

December was the month to make that money, with the holidays and so many fun things to purchase. But something stopped the money flow.

  A Light Of Hope

You try all the things to get traffic to your website.

The hours spend reading and searching for the right keywords.

Doing all the things to get organic traffic from Pinterest.

All of the affiliate marketing training videos that you have stock piled, to be left with a blog that isn't as profitable (not even close) as to what you would have liked.

Then you see this...

So global distribution revenue sucks for Lulu.com.

Now do you see why my own printing company is needed. However, the fact that my journals are selling is gold to me.

Sales have been happening almost every month. But

Now the next step is figuring out how to make more money with my own book! $27.99, sold on lulu.com translates to $9...

But when it's sent by them to Barnes & Noble, Amazon, and other platforms, I only make $0.61.

***UPDATED 2/27/21 - MY JOURNAL IS NO LONGER ON GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION! YES! SO YOU CAN GET YOUR COPY AT A LOWER PRICE POINT DIRECTLY ON AMAZON.***

That's some SH$%%^ Yes, ok, so you understand right?!

You can support my future printing company efforts by joining my patreonhere

I, Hicunni, am being super transparent here.

In a previous state of mind, I would have been very embarrassed to show this data.

It’s great to see how we are starting out and see:

how we can put better strategies in place -

✅ increase traffic to our website

✅ earn and make more money online.

What Not To Do

If you don't start handling your business as a beginner blogger, you will get crappy results.

If you become more of a mindful blogger and really change your hobby ways...

then you can have much success.

Here are 5 things on What Not To Do so you can start winning at blogging

P.S. learn from me, you have encouraged me to take this advise...thank you!

1️⃣ If you don't have a goal it's just a dream.

Do you have a goal for blogging?

It has to be more than to just make money.

Part of mindful blogging is taking notice of what you are doing.

Do a self-care check to see what is the real motivation.

2️⃣ Posting content without doing prior research is dumb.

Keyword research is a must...

Unless you want to get crickets instead of

Customers!

Shout out to https://straycurls.com/blog/ for recommending this book ➡️ ➡️ ➡️

My analytics are getting better...just saying :)

3️⃣ Always have a way to capture emails or keep your hobby.

Finally there's a popup on this blog! Girl...get that popup up asap!

You need optins all over your blog as well.

When you find out who your niche is -

create optins and a popup as a call to action...

the next steps to fulfill what your customer is looking for.

4️⃣ Too many offerings can leave you broke.

This one should bring you to tears...

Especially if you have been around for a while.

You've created all the things, and want to share with the world.

So can relate...

Did you catch the results from my earnings report?

Keep offering the entire spread and you will get those crumbs.

Trust me...I'm taking lots of notes.

Sometimes it takes seeing and hearing it more than one time.

Too tired...let's crush this!

5️⃣ Don't you dare give up.

You better not! It is never too late.

How long are you in for?

I'm here for the long haul and quitting is not an option.

Is quitting an option for you?

Keep moving my friend.

Start with 1, "What Not To Do" tips, and implement.

Stay present, aware of what you are offering.

Do your research for your niche.

Tweak as you go.

Document your journey and keep going.

So this was a long blog, but I wanted to make sure everything is documented -

for our How To Live In Time blog for December.

The Untold Story Of Making Money Online

A reminder: Don’t despise small beginnings. This category of Money Tips and How To Make Money Online is a way to document the journey of this blog, howtoliveintime.com

We officially loaded the first post on 10/20/20, however the goal was to start tracking our earnings for the month of November.

There were 3 ways of making money that were tracked for the month of November. You can read in detail our goal here 3 Ways To Monetize Your Blog In November  There are so many ways to make money online, but we wanted to focus our attention on 3 to start.

But first - Let’s Look At Where Traffic Came From

Right now, organic traffic has been the focus. If you look at the screenshot below, you will see how many visitors decided to check out the blog.

So 17 doesn’t seem like an awful lot of visitors for a month, however, I am grateful. 7 out of 17 returned so that’s 7 lives that found value and can share with others.

Definitely, Google Analytics in depth training is on my list!!! As you can see below, most of the traffic isn’t coming from a social media platform. So my question is, what are they searching for to find this blog?

I did add Yoast SEO and started playing around with keywords (this is another thing on my to do list...learn SEO! ). Geez, there’s so much to learn. It’s more to it than just posting and putting up pretty images! Hey if you have a great course to recommend for this, drop me a comment!

These traffic sources are a little skewed maybe since I do use BuildRedirects for most of my links to track conversions on that platform. There’s a wonder if I should be using both….hmmm. Who knows! But I will find out! (update per my husband, not true, based on what Buildredirects is used for….the conversion tracking stats is part of the Direct traffic. So, I still need BuildRedirects learn more here

So I need to find out, again, how are people finding me on google!

There aren’t many clicking on the blog logo that I included on the sidebar on my author website, hicunnichandler.com...so we need to add more information about this blog throughout the author website.

So, premium91.web-hosting.com:2083 (the source above) actually is broken up into about 16 pages, and is actually blog posts. (see below)

How I monetized using free ads

Let’s look at Google Adsense.

Google Adsense - so for the month of November, we made....drum roll please….

$1.48  So...looks like this blog is in need of more quality traffic! But there’s still room for celebration...I made money . Ha! It’s a start! There was already $2.73 in the account when I started with this blog.

3 ways we focused on monetizing this blog in November

   1. Affiliate Marketing - Unfortunately, this area was dry last month. 3 of the affiliates that were highlighted this month are listed in my CJ Affiliate accout. They are: Godaddy, Namecheap, Office Depot & OfficeMax, and my all time favorite Vitamix. The other one is Amazon. I have screenshots below of our progress.

CJ Affiliate total for November 2020

Amazon total for November 2020

    2. Book Sales- UPDATED 1/5/20 I had a sale on 11/30/20, it posted late. I have included the screenshot below.

None posted in my lulu portal, but the last sale I received was the end of October. Do you see how much was made via Amazon?

Now do you see why my own printing company is needed. You can support this effort by joining my patreon here

   3. Patreon - I started to add a little content then stopped. Should more content be added even though no one joined? Should I wait until people arrive so it won’t look too silly having all that content when no one is there to glean from it.

I, Hicunni, am being super transparent here. In a previous state of mind, I would have been very embarrassed to show this data. It’s great to see how we are starting out and see how we can put better strategies in place to increase traffic to our website and earn and make more money online.

Lessons Learned To Improve for December

  1. More posting is needed for Pinterest to increase the number of visitors to my blog. More visitors, more return visitors, the likelihood of someone buying one of my offerings.

  2. Ramp up promotions on my podcast. Which means, I need to verbally share what’s new for the week and month. Yikes, for almost a year since I started my podcast, I haven’t promoted much...mostly just listing my offering on my author website.

  3. Add a popup!!! Oh my goodness! Why don’t we have one already? This needs to be added this week!

So this was a long blog, but I wanted to make sure everything is documented for our How To Live In Time blog for November.

Please feel free to leave a comment if you have any tips for this newbie. I am still super excited for this mindful living blog and anticipate a very fun and rewarding journey.
